April 30, 2006 - The World REI Tour

PHOTOS and "Catch-Up Posts" to follow...really, I promise (for now, please visit my photo-a-day gallery... http://www.pbase.com/jenfu/photoadayyear2portraits ).

Airplanes still worry me. Even in the best-case-scenario, vodka-tonic is often welcomed to smooth out the edges. I’m sitting on the tarmac right now enduring a 45 minute delay due to flight congestion.

The rest of today followed a similar pace but in a mostly pleasant way. I had spent most of the night editing photos. Insomnia leads to productivity but also potentially to unforeseen naps as well. I checked out of the hotel and embarked on my search for the natural history museum in town. There currently exists there a special exhibit on the brain and I was hoping that it would lend some insight into how that silly little machine worked. I did my best to follow directions and I was disappointed when the directions lead me to the Fair Grounds and not the museum. I abandoned my quest and settled for a sandwich at Schlotzsky’s. An employee at the climbing gym yesterday assured me that I would quickly become familiar with this institution if I were to move down to North Carolina.

Before that, I did visit REI (Recreational Equipment Incorporated). It had been my quest a little while ago to visit every REI in the Country but due to the success of this co-op, I seem to be falling behind by the day. I was hoping that the visit would provide some information on the local bouldering scene. I had all the intentions to get some exercise in. But, after the steak and cheese sandwich from Schlotzsky’s and a warm North Carolina sun, I napped for an hour, leaving less than that for my hike. And now, I’ve resigned myself to sit here in seat 3A (to my surprise, I managed an upgrade today…I perhaps have traded my coveted “parking luck” for “airline seat upgrade luck”). Hopefully, in a few hours, I’ll be back home having embarked on my first “travel”, post-three month work-induced probationary period. I hope that this is an indication that I’ll be hitting the road again soon. I have hopes for what’s around the next bend…
